The foundation presently aids with disaster-relief activities and donations as well. Shinn announced he had prostate cancer in 2009, but luckily beat the deadly disease by March 2010. Thus, the George Shinn foundation now focuses on raising awareness and early detection of prostate cancer. The foundation also educates young minsters of Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute in North Carolina for their participation in ministries and relief in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Furthermore, he has authored several books, the most important ones being “The American Dream Still Works”, “Leadership Development”, and “You Gotta’ Believe”. In 2010, Shinn was not able to sell his shares of the Charlotte Hornets due to the team´s financial issues, so the NBA took over the sale. Shin has three grown-up children: Susan, Chad, and Chris and is currently married to Denise, who is the chair of the George Shinn Foundation.
