Salary
As the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Brock Purdy signed a four-year, $3.73 million rookie contract with the 49ers. The deal included a $77,000 signing bonus and just $77,000 in guaranteed money—one of the smallest contracts for an active starting quarterback in the modern NFL. In his breakout rookie season, when he led the 49ers to a playoff run, Purdy earned a base salary of $705,000. In May 2025, Purdy agreed to a massive five-year, $265 million contract extension with the 49ers. The deal includes $181 million in total guarantees and cements Purdy as the team’s franchise quarterback. Once finalized, the deal will rank among the largest contracts in NFL history, both in total value and guaranteed money. His new contract represents one of the biggest raises ever given to a former seventh-round pick, and drastically alters his financial trajectory. Under his rookie contract, Purdy was set to earn $1.1 million in 2025—a number that will now skyrocket under the terms of the extension.
NFL Career
Brock Purdy played college football at Iowa State, where he set multiple school records but was largely overlooked by NFL scouts. One scouting report even described him as “not a very good athlete… limited arm, both in strength and throw repertoire.” Still, the 49ers took a chance, selecting him with the final pick of the 2022 draft. Purdy began his rookie season as the third-string quarterback behind Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo. When Lance suffered a season-ending ankle injury after just two games, Garoppolo returned as starter—only to suffer a broken foot in December. That thrust Purdy into action late in a game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Although the team lost, Purdy showed promise and was named the starter for the rest of the season. He quickly became a sensation. In his first NFL start, Purdy led the 49ers to a dominant win over Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers—becoming the first quarterback to beat Brady in his debut start. He followed that up with wins over the Seahawks, Commanders, Raiders, and Cardinals, closing out the regular season undefeated in his five starts. In the playoffs, Purdy continued his remarkable run, defeating the Seattle Seahawks in the Wild Card round and the Dallas Cowboys in the Divisional Round. The 49ers’ Cinderella run ended in the NFC Championship Game, where Purdy tore his UCL in the first quarter, a devastating injury that required offseason surgery. Despite the setback, Purdy returned as the starter in 2023 and earned a Pro Bowl selection, silencing any remaining doubters. Although the 2024 season was marred by injuries to several key teammates, Purdy still managed top-10 finishes in QBR and passing yards, solidifying his role as the team’s long-term leader.
Personal Life
During his rookie season, Purdy lived modestly in a shared apartment with teammates Alfredo Gutierrez and Nick Zakelj. His humble lifestyle made headlines, especially given his performance on the field. Off the field, Purdy is known for his grounded demeanor and strong Christian faith. He’s frequently praised by teammates and coaches for his leadership, humility, and work ethic
