“AI, energy, and biosciences are promising fields where you can make a huge impact,” he said. Earlier this year Gates expressed the belief that artificial intelligence has “phenomenal” potential and that anything in that field would provide a person with an exciting lifelong career. He also stated that the energy sector is in a huge growth spurt and needs to attract talent to develop reliable, cheap, and clean energy. Biotech, according to Gates, is another growing field where new workers will be able to search for cures for everything from cancer to obesity. Gates also told today’s new college graduates to surround themselves with “people who challenge you, teach you, and push you to be your best self.” He reminded them to think of others and to consider the less fortunate. Gates said that his biggest regret is that it took him decades to learn about the worst suffering in the world. “You know more than I did when I was your age. You can start fighting inequity, whether down the street or around the world, sooner,” he said. Gates wrapped up his series of Tweets by urging new graduates to be aware of the progress humanity has made. He believes the world is getting better. “That matters because if you think the world is getting better, you want to spread the progress to more people and places.” That sounds like advice we can all use!
